Saturday 23rd October “Top of the Rock” skyscraper observation deck Wonder Tech museum – fully guided educational visit Central Park Museum of Natural History Times Square souvenir shopping Sunday 24th October Final morning in Manhattan – visits to be confirmed (check back soon!) Afternoon subway to JFK airport to fly home. Monday 25th October Land back in Manchester in the early morning Train from Manchester airport to Blackpool

Day one (Wednesday) We will meet at Blackpool North train station to catch the train to Manchester Airport (time to be confirmed). You should have two bags with you: your main case, which should be small and light enough to carry yourself; and your carry on bag which should contain NO liquids or sharp objects. When we arrive at JFK, you will be interviewed by an official from the Department of Homeland Security who will also take your electronic fingerprints and iris scan. Impeccable behaviour and conduct is paramount - these people do not have a sense of humour and will deny you entry to the US if you make inappropriate comments! Upon arrival, we will take the subway to Manhattan and to the Upper West Side, the neighbourhood containing our hostel, the Broadway Hotel and Hostel. Upper West Side is a friendly, residential neighbourhood alongside Central Park. There will be two pupils in each room, sharing a bunk bed. All of our rooms will be situated together with each member of Montgomery staff overseeing 4 bedrooms. The rooms will lock from the inside and pupils will not be permitted to leave their rooms without permission from a member of staff. Pupils will be fully briefed about the safety procedures before leaving school. After dropping our bags, we will head out for a walk into the city. Dinner (included) will be a light meal (to avoid jet lag) at a local fast food outlet. We will then walk down Broadway to Times Square. Times Square is an incredible sight at the heart of central Manhattan, and we will find ourselves passing through here a few times over the course of our trip. Following a exploration of the square in groups, and a short walk to see the Empire State Building, we will head back to our hostel by subway.

Day two (Thursday) Breakfast will be at 8am in the hostel. We will then head into midtown Manhattan, taking a peek into Grand Central Station along the way, to the United Nations headquarters. This is not actually part of the USA, so we will be on international territory during our visit here! We will have a fully guided tour of the UN, including the General Assembly and the Security Council chamber which are the halls in which some of the world's biggest decisions are made. Following a snack lunch (not included, approximate $5) we will visit the Museum of Modern Art, one of the most interesting and inspirational galleries in the world. We will spend the afternoon here and will include an educational tour and lesson (on “Geometry in Modern Art”) by experienced museum staff. We will see some of the works of art discussed in our after school lessons prior to the visit. Later, we will walk up 5th Ave towards Central Park, passing by sights such as Tiffany's, FAO Schwartz, and the Plaza Hotel, before returning to our hostel to complete our workbooks for the day and to change for the theatre. We will then take the subway to Times Square for a performance of "Wicked", one of Broadway's current bestselling shows which plays to sold out audiences every night of the year.

Day three (Friday) Breakfast will be at 8am in the hostel (included). We will then take the subway to Brooklyn for an early morning walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into the Financial District of lower Manhattan. We will have a guided tour of the Federal Bank, which is not usually open to the public, where we will learn about the banking system (which will link with some of the work done in our after school lessons), and get to see the bank's underground vaults which contain a quarter of the world’s gold reserves, worth billions of dollars. This will be followed by a visit to St Paul's Church, which used to stand alongside the twin towers of the World Trade Center, and provided a refuge for firefighters and rescue workers in the days following the 9/11 attacks. We will get to see the former site of the twin towers, and see what is being built in their place. Our tour of lower Manhattan will conclude with a walking tour down Wall Street, one of the smallest, yet most significant streets in the whole of New York. Next we will visit the Museum of American Finance where we will see exhibits on stock markets, currency, and more, before taking part in a one-hour interactive lesson on money markets, delivered by an industry expert. We will pause briefly for lunch and for a short stop at Century 21, a department store where it is possible to find designer products at massively discounted prices. You could tale advantage of the fact that there is no tax on clothes in New York City, unlike the rest of the USA! Next we will board a boat out into the harbour to one of the world's most iconic structures - the Statue of Liberty. We will walk around the statue and will also get some magnificent views of the Manhattan skyline. Next we will reboard our boat and travel to Ellis Island where we will visit the fascinating immigration museum. As we will have seen in our time spent in New York so far, there are many different cultures and languages spoken in the city. Traditionally, Ellis Island was the first port of call for immigrants from Europe and Africa to the USA and the museum is a highlight of any trip to Manhattan.

Once we have arrived back in Manhattan, we will walk to the South Street Seaport mall where you will have the opportunity to do some shopping. We will also eat dinner here in the Food Court (included) where you can choose from Chinese, Japanese, Subway, Burgers, Pasta, Pizza, and more for your evening meal.

Day four (Saturday) Breakfast will be at 8am in the hostel (included). We will then head into Midtown to the Rockefeller Center on 5th Ave. We will visit the Top of the Rock, a viewing gallery at the top of a skyscraper affording breathtaking views over the city. We will then take a fully guided educational tour of the WonderTech laboratory, with the theme of “The Art and Science of Technology”, and where we will enjoy one-of-a-kind exhibits where we can perform virtual open heart surgery, design an animated character, program a robot, and even become part of a broadcast production team. Following our visit, we will have the chance to take a walk through Central Park, seeing the sights featured in many movies and also passing through Strawberry Fields, the John Lennon memorial garden opposite the Dakota Building where he lived. Finally, we will visit the Museum of Natural History (you may have seen it in the film "A Night at the Museum"!) for a brief look at the exhibits, particularly their new exhibits about the planets and solar system. Our final dinner will be at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square which is also a good spot to finish off your souvenir shopping (accompanied by staff, in groups).

Day five (Sunday) Breakfast will be at 8am in the hostel (included). Our final morning in Manhattan. The schedule for this morning is still awaiting confirmation – check back later for updates!
