EDGARS FIELD looks fantastic after its major facelift earlier this year but there have been some complaints that drinks bottles have been left there and mini motorbikes ridden across it in recent months. You can read in this month’s issue how the police have chosen to tackle the problem. Well-travelled Parkies avoid the drop
2011 has been a varied season for Westminster Park cricket club. it began back in the spring with a friendly against our ground share and league rivals Chester Asians and finishes on 11th September away to Neston cc. We have played 20 of our planned 24 games so far, travelling to locations such as carmel, cholmondeley castle, Eaton Hall, Gresford, Gwersyllt, Llay and Tattenhall, with a game at Northop and Neston still to come. The Parkies have had a difficult league campaign, winning four of the 12 games but avoided relegation with back to back wins at the death, ensuring Division 7 status for next year. This season has also seen the arrival of new faces which have swelled our ranks to 21 players and hopefully more will join as we head towards winter nets. The club have also made the decision to start a junior section next year; we have registered for ‘clubmark’, the EcB initiative to protect children in sport and intend to approach local schools once coaching courses have been attended. it has been encouraging to see spectators watching our games and hope we have provided a little light entertainment and that it continues for our last home game on 4th Sept against Blue ceylions (a team of Sri Lankans). For anyone wishing to join or just try it out, we can be contacted via www. westminsterpark.play-cricket.com or facebook (Westminster Park cricket club).

with Police Community Support Officer Jo Pendrey
Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:
on the beat
• Edgars Field Park and Playground Reports have been made f youths gathering within the park and play area and causing damage and leaving empty alcohol bottles and cans on weekends. Also reports of youths riding motorbikes/mini-moto’s around the park • The Meadows / The Groves In previous years due to the warmer weather we have experienced issues with under age drinking and bbq’s on the meadows in particular on weekday evenings and weekend days. High Visability footpatrol in the area, between the hours of 4pm and 9pm weekdays and 12noon – 8pm on weekends. Plans to address the issue Regular high visibility patrols to take place around the Meadows and Edgar’s Field and stop checks to be made of persons causing any anti social behaviour. Youths to be advised and moved on from these areas. Local Priorities You said – There has been a significant increase in burglary offences whereby sheds and garages have been targeted. We did – Regular high visibility patrols have taken place and stop checks on persons acting suspiciously in the area. PCSO Pendrey has visited vulnerable premises and advised owners of security measures to prevent offences taking place.
If you have any questions or see me on patrol please feel free to stop and chat or alternatively contact either myself on 0845 458 6375 or by e-mail at

VITAMIN D v SUN DAMA
Some cheeses contain a small amount, particularly Swiss cheeses. Many foods such as breakfast cereals, soya products, yoghurts and milk products are fortified with vitamin D. By checking labels you can find this information. The most natural way to absorb Vitamin D through the skin and into our bodies is from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Sun exposure for between five to twenty minutes twice a week during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months is probably sufficient to supply enough Vitamin D, which is then stored in our liver and kidneys. to protect our bones.
www.overleighroundabout.co.uk
However, we all need vitamin D for healthy, strong bones. Vitamin D is available in very few foods. Cod liver oil is by far the best source and also other fish livers. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are excellent and luckily, since they are regarded as a healthy food once again and not a cholesterol buster, egg yolks are a fairly good source too.
BEAUTy therapists are renowned for advising clients to protect their skin from ultra violet exposure to prevent signs of premature ageing and skin cancer.

MAGE
Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic
Overleigh Roundabout September 2011 19
Only a small area of the skin needs to be exposed for absorption. The reason beauty therapists and skin specialists want us to particularly protect our face, neck, décolletage and hands from the sun is that these areas over a lifetime will have suffered the most sun exposure and the least likely to be protected by clothing. Unless, of course, you live in a nudist colony, you will notice the underside of your arms, the backs of your thighs and your bottom have very little or no signs of sun damage as they are rarely if ever exposed to the sun. I am not suggesting that you should now start to expose these areas, but maybe your arms or legs for ten or so minutes a couple of times of week could be beneficial. If you really want to keep totally out of the sun then look to taking Vitamin D supplements.
This month’s special offers at The Hough Green Clinic are products that will help repair any sun damage incurred over the summer months. (R) (R). PRIORI CoffeeBerry Brightening Facial Complex is excellent for reducing pigmentation damage. (R) PRIORI Cellular Recovery Serum with DNA Enzyme for sun damaged and pigmented skin and any skin that has been severely sun damaged. Vitage Vitamin C Serum is excellent for evening out pigmentation and repairing damage to collagen.

The Seven Secrets of a Pain-Free Life
By Stephen Massey, chiropractor at the Ambleside Clinic
Or, How to get relief from arthritis 1. Education You need to learn about arthritis. If you do not understand the word it is like a magic spell. It can make you believe that there is nothing you can do and that it is only going to get worse. This does not have to be case. Osteoarthritis is simply wear and tear and it does not have to be painful. 2. Positive Thinking The part of the brain that is responsible for your moods and emotions also decides how much pain you feel. If you are thinking gloomy or angry thoughts you will experience pain as worse than if you are thinking happy thoughts. 3. Relaxation The fight/flight or stress response is a hangover from our ancient history when we needed our wits about us while we were hunting sabre-toothed tigers. Now we have forgotten how to switch off. Taking 15 minutes to sit quietly and relax every day can give your body time to slow down and recuperate. 4. Exercise You know exercise is good for you. But what exercise is best? The elements of a good programme should include; Stretching to release tension in muscles and also take pressure off joints, strengthening, postural exercise, mobilisation: That is simply moving joint repetitively. 5. Therapy/Treatment For treatment to be effective a full medical history and examination should be taken. The examination should include orthopaedic and neurological testing. Once the right information has been gathered a treatment plan can be advised. The best therapy will involve massage of muscles, mobilisation of stiff joints and sometimes manipulation if it is necessary to release adhesions that have formed around joints.

6. Diet Some foods have been shown to trigger arthritis but it seems to vary from individual to individual. So you really have to try leaving things out of your diet and seeing what effect it has. Foods that have been shown to affect some people adversely are wheat, caffeine, dairy and soya products. Green vegetables, nuts, fish and green tea may help reduce inflammation. Red berries, peppers and kiwi fruit contain chemicals that may help to reduce pain. 7. Supplementation There are many supplements on the market the may or may not help arthritis sufferers. Like diet, what helps one person may not help another so it is a matter of trying different supplements to see what works. Some of the most effective supplements for joint health include Fish oils (Or Flax oil for vegetarians) Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSM.

WESTMINSTER PARK
Westminster Park Residents’ Association subs to remain unchanged at £2
iN our June newsletter, and more recently in last month’s overleigh Roundabout, it was announced that subs for WPRA would be increased to £3 following a resolution passed at the AGM in March. This was to help subsidise our local PCSO in the Westminster Park area. We would like to stress that since publication of these two newsletters, this need has not arisen, and subs will NoT be increased. Subs will remain unchanged at £2. We feel that we must explain the situation that we found ourselves in as a Residents’ Association prior to the AGM in March. We were approached by the Police to see whether WPRA would contribute to our local PcSo’s salary. The idea that was put to us was that the Residents’ Associations should consider funding of up to £1000 with the remainder being raised from local businesses, whom the police would approach separately. The idea was put forward for discussion at the WPRA AGM and a resolution was proposed and seconded from the floor that we should raise approximately £350 by a nominal increase of £1 in the annual subs to pay our contribution, should the need arise. Fortunately this need has not arisen, and we are pleased to announce that the part payment of the PcSo’s salary has been dropped by the police as the danger of losing our local PcSo has not materialised. We would like to apologise for any confusion arising from these publications and hope that you will continue to support the WPRA by continuing to pay the annual subscription fee of £2. Julie Sams, Chairwoman of Westminster Park Residents’ Association (WPRA) www.wp-ra.org.uk Raising the standard Westminster Park has been given the Green Flag Award which recognises cleanliness in public spaces. The Green Flag Award scheme is organised by the Keep Britain Tidy consortium and is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. This is the second time the park has obtained this award following its improvement scheme in 2009/10. Further improvements have seen the provision of a new pavilion for sports clubs completed earlier this year. Facilities on site include tennis club, play area, youth facilities, café, BMX track, sports pitches, bowling greens, a croquet lawn, car parking, café and golf course. The park also has an active friends of group who welcome new members.

ress in your life
People often feel that in order to fully relax, they need to have everything straight in their life. It is one of the most common stumbling blocks for people and their relationship to stress. “I’ll be able to relax once I have a new job, get a promotion, moved house etc.” The problem is that one stress stimulus is all too often replaced by another. Sometimes people cope by looking towards their next holiday to release their tension. Is once or twice a year enough? But who doesn’t like feeling good?..... The problem with stress is that it feels awful! Some envious people feel good most of the time. It’s part of their makeup and is based on what coping skills they have, either through temperament, their upbringing or life experiences. The point is, it’s not a lottery, these coping skills can be learned and improved upon and everyone can benefit from that. Not because it’s better for your health, although it is, or because studies say you’ll live longer, although they do, but simply because it’s more enjoyable, it’s more fun, it feels better, it feels good! Throughout the course, the whole person is taken into consideration. The course is therefore split into four distinct areas: Emotional - Get A Grip - How to side step your emotions to achieve more and get what you want Mental - Mind Games - Tools to help transform thought patterns that are holding you back Practical - Survival in the 21st Century Your relationship with technology, culture, the media and priorities and pressures. Physical - Make Your Body Work Relaxation and stress relief strategies that work

some tips to get you started...
Feel Good Tool – Take a week off
We could all do with a holiday when stress gets on top of us; however we can’t take a holiday every time we feel stressed - but we can still take a week off from our busy lives. This is such a good tool to mentally reconnect with yourself. There is no need to take time off work, you just need to clear your diary of everything else. In the evenings don’t make plans with friends, have no extra pressures like hair appointments during the day. Break out of your usual routine. Add in some luxuries too, really plan and focus on what you want to do. Prepare for the week so that you’re not spending your time at the supermarket or cooking and cleaning. Then rather than head straight to the TV for entertainment, perhaps read a book instead. Don’t make or take personal calls; defend your precious time. It costs nothing and you can do it whenever you want, many times a year! It feels great and is a fantastic way to both regroup your thoughts and boost your immune system by giving your body a rest. Book yourself a holiday!
Feel Good Tool – Say it Out Loud
This is a really effective, quick tool for everyday stresses that crop up. Take a moment to really pinpoint what it is you’re stressed about. Say that stress out loud. Example “I’m feeling stressed because my friend is upset and I want to be able to fix it.” Sometimes the result is a sentence that highlights to us that it’s not our responsibility, perhaps there’s nothing we can do to change it, or we’re being irrational. Sometimes it’s ludicrous; sometimes it will make you laugh! Once you say it out loud the stress associated with it is often diminished immediately. For over 30 more practical tools to support a less-stressed lifestyle, come along to one of our courses...
Hot colours for september
september is a good month for flamboyant and brightly coloured flowers and more subtle colours for those who prefer them. Here are some of my favourites. Dahlias have a variety of flowers shapes but I like the larger blooms such as the cactus flowered varieties. Dahlias like rich, moisture retentive but well drained soil, in sun to do their best. Once they have finished flowering and the first frosts start, cut off the remaining foliage and dig up the tubers to store in a dry, frost free place overwinter. You can leave them in the ground over winter but if they freeze, the tubers may well die back and you will need to buy new plants next year. Lobelia cardinalis is a perennial that likes damp soil and has scarlet flowers on tall stems that will light up an autumn border. If you like quieter colours and have dry, well drained soil and sun, consider the small shrub Perovskia. This has grey green foliage and spikes of light blue flowers. They should
GardeninG by Janet HeatH
be pruned in spring by cutting the previous year’s growth back hard to about 2 to 3 buds as they flower on growth made in the same year. The ever faithful Japanese Anemone will flower for weeks and this year has started flowering almost a month earlier than usual. They take time to establish but will cover the ground and smother most weeds. Helianthus Lemon Queen is another favourite with lots of pale yellow daisy like flowers on stems up to 1.5m tall if grown in moisture retentive soil. One shrub that is at its best in September is Hibiscus syriacus or tree hollyhock. Slow to start off, these shrubs like a sunny position and will have hollyhock like flowers in white, pink or blue. Try Hibiscus Blue Bird or Woodbridge for a late show of flowers for weeks. If you have a pond, then cover it with netting to prevent leaves falling into the water and rotting. Lawns can be re-turfed or sow grass seed when the weather is wet. Also rake out dead grass and moss from the lawn in September.

QUEEN’S PARK HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
School celebrates 100 years
Over 500 ex-students and teachers attended school reunions at Queen’s Park High School during July. one of the oldest participants Mrs J cook (pictured) who attended the school in the 1930’s related fascinating stories to present day students who are writing a 100th birthday edition of the school magazine ‘The inkwell’. Barbara Thomas wrote to the school after the event commenting on the warm friendly atmosphere in the school and the clever design of the school building. David Griffiths who retired from the school some time ago commented: “The evening gave me the opportunity to meet once again many students from the seventies and eighties and to discover where their many and varied paths had taken them. It also reaffirmed for me the importance of the role of the teacher in society”. The 100th Birthday event in September will provide an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic year the school has had, a very complementary ofSTED inspection in May and the expected high achievement in this year’s GCSE and ‘A’ Level results.
Trio say farewell
Three familiar faces will be missing when pupils return to Queen’s Park High this autumn term. Assistant headteacher Derek Brooks, School sports co-ordinator Dennis Dorman and assistant headteacher Sue Kervin have retired from the Handbridge school after a combined 113 years of service.
QUEEN’S PARK HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

James Gibson worked hard to gain A grades in Physics and Maths, B in Biology and 2Cs in Politics and citizenship. He will now go to Nottingham University to read Physics. Kim Jones and Emma clark achieved outstanding results in the Visual Arts. They both gained full marks in Art and Design. Kim achieved 3A* grades in Art & Design, Photography and Textiles.
