Relay For Life!
On June 10th and 11th, many of our campus team members, students and staff, will be participating in the Relay for Life here in Wausau. What is Relay for Life? According to the American Cancer Society website, ―Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each teams is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length‖ (ACS, 2011, para. 1). Rasmussen has put together a team of walkers. We‘ve been collecting donations in various ways. We still have raffle tickets for sale and you can still buy and create a luminary in honor of a loved one who has battled cancer. AND, you can still join us on the track! Call or email Susie Krause to schedule a walking time for yourself, or just come on down to John Muir on Friday night to cheer us on.

Quick Facts: Who: You. Your family and friends. What: Relay for Life! Where: John Muir Middle School, 1400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau, WI. When: Set up: 6/10, 5pm Opening events: 6/10, 6pm Rasmussen’s “theme” lap (theme is “medical” so bring your crutches, wheelchairs, scrubs, and more): 6/10, 11pm Note: Students, bring your homework so you can study for finals in-between laps!

Fellow Students Give Advice for Summer
Rasmussen students go to school year round. Sometimes being a student in summer can be tough. Here is some grand advice from your fellow students: ―I take all online classes and I have decided that all of my homework and discussion posts will be due by Friday of each week. We have tons of plans for weekends this summer and I want to make sure everything is done before the weekends start‖ —Jessica Felch ―I will study outside so I get to enjoy summer AND get my school work done‖ — Anonymous ―I have a saying, ‗If I am early then I am on time, if I am on time then I‘m late, and if I am late it is unacceptable.‘ If I apply my saying to my school work, and maintain my motivation then I will succeed‖ — Jason Schmidt ―Utilize summer school programs for the children so we are all in school at the same time. Take morning and online classes so we can still go to the beach or pool in the afternoon‖ — Anonymous

Book Club News
The new Health Sciences book club (open to everyone) is currently reading The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. If you would like to join in on this read, ask Jeneen to get a book for you via interlibrary loan. The regular campus book club will be reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for summer quarter. According to Amazon reviewer, Tom Nissley, the book is a ―fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore...who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her ... consent...turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive...in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion....[this is a] haunting story that asks the questions, Who owns our bodies? And who carries our memories?‖ Contact Jeneen to reserve your copy!

Diversity Spotlight: Summer Safety Tips
We all know that summer is a time for fun in the sun and enjoying the outdoors. Kids are out of school and adults are taking vacations. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that summer also is the time of year consumers are most likely to be injured. So, whether you spend your days at the pool or at home doing yard work, remember to be safe! Are you using the correct safety measures to ensure you make it back to class or work on Monday? Are you using ear plugs, eye protection, digger‘s hotline, sun screen, and even stretching before your projects? Below are some safety tips to consider courtesy of the American Academy of Pediatrics: Remember to use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays on both sunny and cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Limit the duration of intense or strenuous exercise with high heat and humidity levels. Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight in material. In order to stay well hydrated, drink lots of water or sports drinks. After exercise, drink a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat and provide carbohydrates for energy.

In celebration of National Safety Month, join us on campus on Tuesday, June 14th from 4:305:30pm to learn more summer fun tips and participate in safety events. Activities will include field sobriety tests performed while wearing beer goggles and much more!

Tips for Studying for a Math Final
Here are time-tested tips from our Learning Center tutors: Read ALL directions thoroughly, as they may differ from section to section. IT‘S THE DETAILS – on a math exam – THAT TRULY MATTER! Break an equation down into its parts – read it as a whole to start with! READ the test all the way through first! You may find answers in other sections. Give a question no more than 2-3 minutes. Then move on! You will build your confidence as you answer questions, and this will lessen your anxiety. Go back and work on any difficult ones at the end. (You may see how to solve some, as you work through the test.) Ask your instructor for explanations and support! Often, instructors have great testtaking tips for their own exams!! (They work. Really!)
