Members voting at the 2014 International
Convention will consider proposed
amendments that determine whether to
continue with our current process of dele-
gate voting or to institute a general elec-
tion that allows every member to vote in
the election of Administrative Board and
elected committee members.
All members in attendance at the
convention vote on proposed amendments
to the Constitution and the International
Standing Rules. Officers and elected com-
mittee members are currently elected by
state organization presidents who have
one vote for every five active and reserve
members. The state organization presi-
dent may cast all her states’ votes for a
particular nominee or she may split her
vote if there is more than one nominee.
EIection Process to be Considered at 2014 InternationaI Convention
If the convention votes to allow
every member to vote, all members will
be able to vote for the members of the
Administrative Board. All members
would vote for the president, the vice
presidents, the member"at"large, and
Finance Committee members while only
members within a region will vote for
their regional director and regional rep-
resentatives to the Nominations Com-
mittee. Only Latin American and Cana-
dian members would vote for their own
area representative. Members would
vote electronically or by requested paper
ballot.
The Ad Hoc Elections Process
Committee (EPC), approved by the 2012
Executive Board and appointed by Pres-
ident Dr. Beverly Helms, has researched
costs, consulted the Finance Committee,
studied the nominations process, com-
municated with members, and solicited
member input via Survey Monkey and at
regional conferences.
Various vending companies have
submitted estimated costs of an electron-
ic election ranging between $15,000 and
$25,000 per election. The 2012"2014
Finance Committee is aware of the pos-
sibility of an every member voting elec-
tion process. If the change is approved,
the 2014"2016 Finance Committee will
have the task of budgeting for the new
voting process.
The ad hoc committee submitted to
the Constitution Committee proposed
amendments that would make a general
election possible. The convention has the
final authority whether to approve or dis-
approve proposed amendments. The deci-
sion rests with the vote of the 2014 con-
vention.
Go to www.dkg.org to find more
information about a general election and
the full results of surveys taken in 2013
on the Ad Hoc DKG Election Process

Happy 2014!! Reflecting on 2013, Alpha
Delta State has a lot to be proud of:
We celebrated our 75
th
Anniver-
sary. In Alpha Delta State, dedicated
members have kept the work of the Socie-
ty focused on the future, as was witnessed
by the celebration of this milestone in our
history.
We collected an overwhelming
number of books for children receiving
treatment in Ohio’s Children’s Hospitals.
Thank you for your generosity.
New members were initiated into
the Society during the year.
We enjoyed “genuine spiritual fel-
lowship” at the Biennial Seminar in Chil-
licothe.
Many of us gathered at the North-
east Regional Conference in Portland, Maine, where we broadened our knowledge of
Delta Kappa Gamma.
We had a successful leadership workshop for incoming state committee chair-
men, coordinators, and liaisons in August.
Now, it is time to set goals for 2014 to take Alpha Delta State toward greater ho-
rizons. This cannot happen without you.
I hope you make attending the 2014 Alpha Delta State Convention one of your
goals. The convention will be held April 4, 5, and 6, at the Polaris Hilton in Colum-
bus. A variety of workshops will be offered. Many of the workshops will increase
your knowledge of Delta Kappa Gamma. There will be workshops to help your chap-
ter build membership, retain members, develop a chapter website, and plan programs.
There will be an Info Fair, art show, and time to visit with friends from around the
state and make new friends. Please review the convention information in this edition
of The Voice and register to attend. You will notice, that if you have five (5) chapter
members register with all the registrations sent in one (1) envelope, each of you will
save $5.00. I am sure you will be glad you attended the convention. I am always rein-
vigorated after attending convention, and it also serves as a reminder to members as to
why they agreed to membership.
It is time for chapters to complete and send reports. The following committee
chairmen must return the report to the corresponding state committee chairman or
officer by February 1, 2014: World Fellowship, Scholarship, Membership, Finance,
Educational Excellence, Communication, Necrology (to Membership Committee
Chairman), and chapter president. The forms are available on the Alpha Delta State
website and the International website. Reminder: all chapters must send the Necrolo-
gy Report, even if there were no deaths in your chapter. The Necrology Report along
with the Form 6, is where information is obtained for the Celebration of Life Service
at state convention.
As chapter Nominations Committees meet to develop a slate of officers, I would
like to echo the challenge issued by International President Dr. Beverly Helms in the
Nov./Dec. 2013 DKG News: “My challenge to you is to be that person in your chapter
who steps forward when asked to lead next biennium. Be the one who has the courage
to ask, ‘Where are we as a chapter and where do we want to go?’ ” Have the courage
to step out of your comfort zone and lead your chapter toward greater horizons.

Witness a KaIeidoscope Spectrum of Programs
The Alpha Delta State Educational Excellence committee has three goals. The first is
to advance excellence in education; the second, to empower women; and the third, to
increase global awareness. Members are urged to attend the Educational Excellence
workshop at the April State Convention. Meaningful material will be distributed for
members to develop a strong direction for their committee programs. Chapter program
ideas will focus on all of these goals and cover extensive topics facing education to-
day.
The DKG News and Alpha Delta State website will have continual information.
The Educational Excellence Committee would like all EEC/Program of Work Chair-
men to forward their email address to Sharyn Sibera at [email protected]. Ques-
tions or concerns can also be directed to this email. Pertinent information will be sent
to chapters throughout the state.
Come enjoy the enthusiasm of this committee and view the largest Kaleidoscope
at the Alpha Delta State Convention in April.

You Can Meet
The arts speak a universal language wherein individuals, peoples, cultures and histo-
ries are revealed. Educators and their students value the arts as modes for developing
skills and concepts, thinking and reflecting, producing and displaying, and feeling suc-
cess and pride. DKG founders were either visual or performing artists, themselves, or
offered their voices and other support for the arts. Many current members make the
arts and humanities an integral part of their lives. DKG International recently unrolled
an online visual arts display.
Visual and performing arts are a big part of events at Alpha Delta State conven-
tions. One of the many ways we celebrate the arts involves member"participation in
our Visual Arts Display. This opportunity is delightful and revealing. It offers a way
to connect and re"connect with other members. The Personal Growth and Services
Committee is again organizing and hosting this event. Members are cordially invited
to register their intent to participate in the display so we can give the artwork the
honor it deserves. See the invitation/directions on our website and in this issue of The
Voice (on page 5). Contact Jane Meese, PG&S chairman, by March 1, 2014.
Also, PG&S put out a call to hear from members involved in educational endeav-
ors beyond what is or was (practicing or retired) their usual paid work assignment. To
date, we’ve heard from three amazing women, two of whom have sustained their ser-
vice for several years. Are there more of you out there? Let us know.
Jane Meese, Personal Growth & Service Chairman

As your chapter begins to plan for the
coming year, consider the following:
As you Identify, Invite and Initiate
new members, take advantage of the Ori-
entation Guide with accompanying slide
presentation, which will give prospective
members an understanding of our Socie-
ty.
Re"inspire, Re"Affirm, and Re"Build
Chapter membership by using the Reori-
entation Guide, and accompanying slides
which cover all aspects of our Society.
Both of these programs are available
from International.
February 1, 2014, is the deadline for
sending your chapters Necrology report
(even if you did not have any deceased
members) and Membership report to Pa-
tricia Cermak, 9504 Greenhaven, Brecks-
ville, Ohio 44141.

Suggestions for
Chapter Membership
Now that Alpha Delta State has celebrated its 75
th
Anniversary, there will be many
chapters celebrating their anniversaries. We would enjoy seeing how your chapter cel-
ebrated or is planning to celebrate your 75
th
anniversary; therefore, a display is being
planned for state convention. Chapters are invited to send one or two pictures of their
celebration activities/events. Please include a short description as well as the chapter
name and the person sending the pictures. If chapters have prepared special booklets or
lists of their celebration activities or events, a copy would be appreciated for this dis-
play. Perhaps these will aid other chapters as they plan their 75
th
celebrations. Due to
the nature of this display, items sent cannot be returned, so be sure to send only copies.
Please send pictures and information to Tammy Schroeder at Box 415, Kalida,
Ohio 45853 by March 1, 2014.

The World Fellowship grant recipients
have been selected for 2013"2014.
Twenty"three women will receive $4,000
grants for this year to study in the U.S. or
Canada. In addition to the new grants, ten
women have received extensions. You
may refer to the DKG News (Nov/Dec
2013) for a complete list of recipients.
While none of these women will be
studying in Ohio, your chapter may want
to find a way to support our A. Margaret
Boyd recipient, Thu Hoan Do of Vi-
etnam, studying at Ohio University.
Thank you to those chapters who
have already contributed to the World
Fellowship Fund this year; all chapters
are encouraged to consider this worth-
while project. Several biennial reports
have been received with great fundraising
ideas included. The Alpha Delta State
World Fellowship Committee looks for-

Here’s a meeting mind bender!
You can start reading here!
One way to move the business of your meeting more easily and fairly is the use of
motions. “I move to/that etc.” is a main motion which requires a second and, for us, the
motion written and signed by the maker and seconder.
There are subsidiary motions that apply to what can happen to the main motions
themselves. All subsidiary motions require a second but the first difference is in wheth-
er or not the group may debate and/or amend the motion. (Stick with it: an example
follows.)
For instance, to “table” a motion or to “call the previous question” (ask for a vote
on the question being debated) do require seconds but are not debated. Tabling the mo-
tion requires a majority vote, whereas to “call for the question” (asking that a vote be
taken on the motion being debated) requires a 2/3 majority because it limits group’s
right to debate. (It’s tough but easier than reading Roberts.)
Similarly, a member may move to limit or extend the time for debate on a specific
motion. To do so requires a second. The times may be amended and the motion re-
quires a 2/3/ majority because it limits the group’s right to debate.
To “postpone to a certain time,” to “send to committee,” and to “amend,” all re-
quire seconds, can be debated, and require a majority vote.
To “postpone indefinitely” is the same, but can’t be amended.

Or you can start reading here!
So here’s the way it would work in a meeting.
The main motion ranks at the bottom and what happens to it can take place as in
the following order: it can be postponed indefinitely and then amended. It could then
be sent to committee or postponed to a certain time. Debate on it could be limited or
extended and someone could ask that it be voted upon. Finally, a member could ask to
lay it on the table which, appropriately after all that, finishes it. Each action takes prec-
edence over the one above it. If the main motion were tabled, none of the other motions
mentioned here could take place.

Or you can start reading here, but you’ll have to look at the first part for the columns.
So, if you are visual and have made it this far, making a chart for the above puts
the main motion on the bottom as the least important and the motion to “lay on the
table” at the top and the others in order in between. Then, add a column for
“seconded,” “debatable,” “amendable” and whether the vote is a “simple majority” or a
“2/3 majority” OR just check out a chart of subsidiary motions from Parliamentary
Procedure Made Simple.
Stay in motion for the New Year!

Your state treasurer is excited! This is the first year 100% of Ohio chapters complied
with the IRS requirement to file a 990n by November 15. All 98 chapter treasurers who
fulfilled this responsibility should be congratulated.
This information was reported to Operation Services Administrator, Phyllis Hick-
ey (at International Headquarters), who replied, “YEAH!! Congratulations! This is a
huge accomplishment! I am so proud of you and appreciate all your efforts in making
this happen.”
This prompted a response from International President, Dr. Beverly Helms,
“Diana, I want to join Phyllis in congratulating all the chapters in Ohio. Way to go. For
our third largest state organization, that is a great accomplishment. Great work and
please let the chapter treasurers and all involved know that we are proud of the accom-
plishment.”

Praise Given to State and Chapter Treasurers
A tip of the hat is given to the majority of
chapter treasurers who sent in dues and
needed forms by November 12, 2013.
Dues collection is one of the least favor-
ite responsibilities of chapter treasurers
and finance committee members.
Many treasurers have asked for help
in collecting dues. Below are a few tips
for dues collection.
Begin collecting in the spring.
Give members an option to pay
dues in installments.
Offer an incentive for paying dues
by a specific date.
Designate proceeds from a fund-
raiser to offset dues.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, Gamma Theta chapter celebrated Nancy Johnson’s 50
years as a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Two former
students, and also fellow DKG sisters, spoke about Nancy as being an exceptional
teacher. Nancy was presented with an afghan embroidered with her name, Delta Kappa
Gamma, 50 years, and the symbol of the red rose, in honor of her accomplishment.
Nancy was inspired to become a teacher by her grandmother, who taught in a lo-
cal one"room school. Nancy attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland for
two years, completing her degree in government from Lake Erie College in Paines-
ville. She received her Master in Education at Kent State University. Nancy held dual
certification in elementary and secondary education. She taught grades 4"6 for two
years at Longfellow Elementary in the Willoughby Eastlake School District before
moving to the Painesville Township School District where she remained for over 30
years. Nancy taught English, Reading, World History, and Special Education.
When asked what she most enjoyed about teaching, she responded, “The kids.”
Nancy is a proud member of DKG and attended meetings as long as her health permit-
ted. Following the ceremony, Nancy commented that she thought her grandmother
would be “looking down” on her with pride.

WORKSHOP SESSION I
10:40"11:25 AM

A. The Ins and Outs of Membership.
Members are the foundation of your
chapter. Experience Pride in the Big Pic-
ture–an orientation guide on gaining new
members and providing them with an
understanding of the Society. Learn
ways to Re"affirm and Re"build chapter
membership. How to celebrate members,
problem"solve membership issues, and
honor deceased members will be ex-
plored.

B. Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha. Laugh and
breathe yourself healthy, without leo-
tards or pretzel poses! Experience the
health benefits of laughter. Learn activi-
ties to do alone, with friends and family,
and in your classroom to reduce stress
and improve health. Wear comfortable
clothing and bring your child"like play-
fulness. All levels, from novice laughers
to experienced laughter yoga partici-
pants, are welcome!

C. Start a Chapter Website Today! A
sample chapter website will be set up
from scratch using Weebly. Participants
are encouraged to bring a laptop so they
can begin their own site. Assistance will
be given during the presentation and a
later time will be scheduled for individu-
al help. Participants are encouraged to
look over, “How to build a chapter web-
site using Weebly” on the Alpha Delta
State website prior to attending.

D. The Forgotten Dream. The original
dream of the founders was to lift women
educators out of a submissive mode. It
was the dream of making it possible for
them to have an inner growth. It was the
dream of giving women a platform to act
and demonstrate; to carry out certain
responsibilities; to participate and lead
others to that dream. We will explore the
dream, the current vision, and our roles.

E. Calling all Buckeye Fans! Make a
scarlet and gray Buckeye flower pin to
show your Buckeye team spirit. Limited
to 20 participants.
F. Tweak the “What” and Change the
“How”. Generation iY: those kids who
know life only with iPods, iPhones, and
iPads and other electronic gadgets. How
we engage them in learning looks differ-
ent today than it did ten years ago. The
younger portion of Generation Y wants
to make an impact; they want to be lead-
ers. How do we help them achieve these
goals? Habitudes! Information will be
shared from the Leadership Conference
attended through the Lucille Cornetet
Professional Development Award.

G. A Kaleidoscope Spectrum of Pro-
grams from E.E.C. Our Educational
Excellence Committee will focus on the
three key areas from International. We
will set goals, promote projects, and sug-
gest programs to help serve every Alpha
Delta State chapter.

WORKSHOP SESSION II
11:35 AM"12:20 PM

H. Bells, Bells, Bells. View a collection
of different bells and learn about their
uses, history, construction, and origins.
You will also be able to experience the
joy and sound of carillons – their music,
construction, and operation. Maybe you
will get to play some handbells.

I. Hey, I Didn’t Fall (And if I Do, I
Can Get Up!). Most of us know some-
one who has suffered a fall. Falling is not
an inevitable part of the aging process!
Learn and practice simple, low impact
exercises to strengthen your extremities,
increase your flexibility, and improve
your balance. Hints, suggestions, and
strategies to prevent falls in and around
the home will be shared.

J. Parliamentary Procedure: Let Bob
Do It. Do your meetings get off track?
Do a “few” do all the talking? Do you
hesitate to take a leadership position be-
cause you don’t want to lead a meeting?
Become a Parliamentary Pro and let
Roberts Rule for Parliamentary Proce-
dure keep your meetings short and effec-
tive.
K. Introduction to Service Learning.
Have you heard about service learning
but are not sure if you should try it or
how to do it? Many colleges and univer-
sities are now requiring service learning.
More complex than just volunteering,
service learning is a means of giving
back to the community while educating
students. Handouts, include a reading
list, will be provided to participants.

L. STRS Up"Dates. Mr. Nick Treneff,
Director of Communications–STRS, will
present recent findings for actively
teaching and retired teachers, regarding
STRS benefits. Mr. Treneff will have a
time within his presentation that will
allow for member questions.

M. Pretty Scarves. Would you like to
learn how to make knitted frilly scarves?
For this workshop you will need to bring
the following: 1 skein of Red Heart Bou-
tique yarn in your favorite color, size 9
knitting needles, knitting needle end cov-
er, and an empty paper towel roll. You
will learn the secret to make this project
easy and begin making your scarf. In-
structions will be given on how to finish
at home. Limit 15 "20.

N. Firearm Safety in the Home.
Mitchell Kirby will lead a discussion and
demonstration focusing on the safe own-
ership, handling, and storage of firearms,
especially when children are present.

O. Estate Plans for Delta Kappa
Gamma Members. No one wants to
think about death or dementia or bad
health. If you plan correctly, most of
your assets (money, house, investments,
car) will pass without the aggravation. It
can be easy.

P. Choir Rehearsal. Be part of the
Alpha Delta State Choir. Be sure to fill
out the appropriate form on page 8 and
send to Cheryl Quay, Director.
