Top Ten Car Manufacturers in India
The Indian car market has come a long way since its inception in the late 1940s. Initially, Indian car manufacturers were contingent upon the international market for new and technologies. But today, India has emerged as a strong player in the automobile industry in terms of technology, design, and creativity and Indian car manufacturers are held in high respect by the global community. Some of the top car manufacturers in India are Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Motors, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra along with many foreign car manufacturers that have registered themselves in the top ranking lists. Toyota, Ford, Suzuki, Skoda, Hyundai, Honda, and General Motors are a few of them.

Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Udyog Ltd. (MUL) was born in the year 1981. Since 2004, the company has manufactured more than 5 million cars. Maruti cars are very popular among the price conscious Indian populace due to their affordability and are believed to revolutionize the Indian car industry. Later, the company was re-christened as Maruti Suzuki in 2001 when it entered a joint venture with Suzuki. The company sells around 500,000 cars per year with a wide array of models: 800, Gypsy, Omni, Alto, WagonR, Grand Vitara, Swift, Grand Vitara, Zen Estilo, Grand Vitara, Versa, SX4, and Swift DZiRE.

Tata Motors
Tata Motors Ltd. is a multinational car company with its headquarters in Mumbai. Established in 1945, Tata Motors is the first automobile company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It‟s the country's largest company in terms of commercial and passenger automobile production. Their acquisition of premium brands Jaguar & Land Rover has further added pride to the Indian car market. The Tata stable comprises of Indica V2, Indica Vista, Indigo, Indigo CS, Indigo Marina, Indigo XL, Safari, Sumo Grande, and Sumo Victa.

Mahindra and Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra, one of India‟s leading car manufacturers, is a part of the US $6.7 billion Mahindra Group. Set up in1945 as Mahindra and Mohammad, it‟s the first company to introduce the jeep in India. Its flagship model, Mahindra Scorpio is one of the most popular SUVs and has several accolades to its credit including the “Best Car of the Year” from both CNBC Auto Car and BBC on Wheels. It has a range of over 25 models and a 275-strong dealer network throughout India. Their venture with Renault has given birth to the sedan „Logan‟. The company manufactures SUVs, light commercial vehicles, and three wheelers. M&M is illuminating the car industry with the following models: Bolero, Bolero Camper, Maxx, Maxx Maxi Truck, Maxx Pick-Up, Maxx PickUp Chassis, Scorpio, Scorpio Getaway, and Mahindra-Renault Logan.

Hindustan Motors
Hindustan Motors Ltd. (HML) was founded by Mr. B. M. Birla in 1942. It‟s the creator of the famous Ambassador car - the king of the yesteryears that was widely used as a taxicab and as government limousine. Hindustan Motors in a joint venture with Mitsubishi has gifted many car models to India. The product line of HML: Ambassador and several cars from Mitsubishi - Cedia, Lancer, Montero, Outlander, and Pajero.

Hyundai Motors India Ltd.
Formed in 1996, Hyundai Motors India Ltd. (HMIL) is owned by Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company. It‟s one of the fastest growing car companies in India.
