W . Edward Deming (1900-1993)

INTRODUCTION
W. Edward Deming was the father of total quality management in Japan. He said most employers think poor quality of product comes from employees fault of which its from the system of control. Total quality is very important in today's business aim at satisfying customers. Howard P. Stevens, 2008, p.15 said to accomplish total quality management, you eliminate waste and improve productivity. According to Iwarere, 2009, p.34, understanding the government policies is essential as well as the market environment, size of market, number of competitors, quality of their products, economic situation and level of demand

DEFINITION
Total quality management is a set of management practices through which the organization meets up with the consistency concept or exceeds customer requirements. CIMA officials terminology(2005) expresses TQM as “an Integrated and comprehensive system of planning and business functions so that products or services are produced to meet or exceed customer expectations. Parumasur, Sanjana B et.al (2009,153) emphasizes on TQM as tightly aligned with organizations overall business strategy to maximize customer satisfaction and changes mindsets toward quality improvement

PRINCIPLES OF TQM
W.Edward came up with 14 principles of TQM as an application for transformation of American industry.

The Principles are : Create constancy of purpose. Adopt new philosophy. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag. Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service. Institute training on the job. Institute leadership.

Drive

out fear. Breakdown barriers between departments. Eliminate slogans, exhortations and target for the workforce. Remove barriers that rob the hourly work of his right to pride of workmanship. Remove barriers that rob people in management and in engineering of their right to pride of workmanship. Institute a program of education and self-employment. Put everybody in the company to work to accomplish the transformation.

Basic Principle
Ron kurtus (2001) said the basic principles of TQM in engaging in business are to satisfy the customer, satisfy the supplier and continuously improving the product of the business.

OBJECTIVES OF TQM
Top

management leadership and support highly is required. The focus should be strictly on customers satisfaction. Proceed on long-tern commitment. Enhancement of reward and recognition to workers. There should be adequate commitment of job training. Employee empowerment and team working.  There should be effective communication. Continuous improvement of product should the company’s priority.
