United States PV Market
y y

The 2009 PV Market Overview In 2009, the United States was the third largest solar photovoltaic market in the world, after Germany and Italy. Despite a challenging domestic economic environment, the US market still delivered a growth rate of 36%, strong but not nearly as strong as the 62% growth in 2008. US government policies progressed Though utility barriers remained unresolved, sixteen states and Washington, D.C. have enacted a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) with solar or distributed generation set-asides to promote PV. y The large number of state policy initiatives has created a fragmented regulations and incentive environment but states are stimulating local markets. Federal incentives are playing a much larger role in stimulating demand over the next two years. y California continues to play a critical role; the state accounted for 53% of US on -grid PV installations in 2009. U.S. market forecast to grown to 4.5 ± 5.5 GW by 2014 y The US market is forecasted to grow to between 4.5-5.5 GW over the next five years, around ten times the size of the 2009 market and an average annual growth rate of 30% per annum. y The US order book for PV systems was at 12 GW in 2009, which represents the total of solar set-aside Renewable Portfolio Standards, projections of demand from multi year funded incentive programs, stimulus-funded projects and other large utility identified projects.
