Use of Mobile Phone in School
In 1973 a person named Dr. Martin Cooper from Motorola demonstrated something that revolutionized the concept of communication. His work was like the Goddess Moirae which molded itself with the future of the mankind. He put forward a splendid model of a hand-held phone which is now known as mobile phone or cell phone. From that day till now there had been huge developments in that concept. Making it more reliable, secure and of course more mobile. Now like the two magnetic poles of the earth, nature always contrives something in a pair of somewhat equal but contradicting forces. In plain words everything in this universe possesses two sides. Generally we recall them as good side or bad side. That argument is not exempted from the concept of cellular phones. When someone starts inking the columns about pros and cons about the whole concept of the mobile phone, that person will eventually run out of ink. Also the title of this article emphasizes on its use in a school. In a social science it is customary that when criticizing something its good qualities are often laid out first. Then its other side is discussed. That code will also be followed here. But even describing its qualities another question arises about whether the user chooses it for good purposes or for morally bad purposes. More light will be shed on its practical application. So the next lines will embark the theoretical analysis of this debate and it will provide a sketch about the utility of a cell phone in a school. The main purpose of a mobile phone is to make phone call and/or to send text messages. Our title can widen its scope to embrace smartphones or feature phones. So nearly every feature phone is equipped, with some basic but useful features like bulk messaging, reminders, log, voice recorder, expandable memory (not always), multimedia playback and the ability to search and surf the internet. Now since the specifications of a feature phone has been laid out it is time to start praising it. Bulk or group messaging is quite useful for a teacher to arrange or manage his class. It can be done by typing one message and sending it to the whole class. Next is the ever useful reminder. As the title suggests that the reminders are like a memo pad which automatically alerts its user. This becomes quite helpful in the daily life of a student as well as in that of a teacher. Voice or sound recorder is perfect tool for a student. It can absorb the exact words of the lecturer. This service enables the student to recall it at any time anywhere. Multimedia playback isn’t quite useful for a school student but is can be applicable if it only used for audio books. The mobile phone’s main feature that is to make phone calls has been regarded as the perfect tool is most cases of emergency. Lastly, the internet. Internet is a world itself. It can provide vast information about anything. Therefore it is used as a perfect educational aid. Now we turn the other way. The ability of a mobile phone to contact someone can be regarded as the main fallacious aspect of a cell phone. A student can use it to get in touch with anyone, which in most cases produces bad influence and results. The multimedia playback is mostly used for the purposes that destroys the character of a student and astray him from his duties. Same is the case with the internet. As mentioned before that internet is a world itself so the chances of its destructive uses are pretty high.

That settles the theory but what actually happens in practice. The problem is that at least 4/5 students are improperly using handhelds. This is quite a curse for the school discipline. And ultimately this is affecting the basis of a modern society where education is considered as the keystone. The life in school is easily manageable without a mobile phone and is quite safe than that of destructive use. Hence the final verdict is that the use of mobile phone should be prohibited in an educational institute unless the students are honest and mature enough to use it in a constructive manner.
