Values, Money, Character, Social Selfishness, and Life
October 17th, 2012 at 4:53 AM
I have some notes that I have written up into a post for RSD nation. I’m talking about self-
actualization and not phallus-focused theorycrafting...

Values

Your values represent a system for setting priorities in your life, they help you define the
boundaries of your and others behaviour, and they help you weigh the importance of various
things in your life. They are the driving force in your life, the source of your motivations and
intentions. Your values are essentially your character. Many people’s values are external; they
place importance on wealth, status, power, and recognition – this is often a product of living in
western society. Other people have an internally validated set of values, these people base their
decisions off a criterion they have created and evaluated for themselves, derived from their
experience.

As you sort out what is important to you, you will slowly evolve your system of values. This
happens as you go through life and have more experiences. The more experiences you have and
the clearer your values become. As this happens your ability to live in alignment my with your
values is improved, and this leads to you becoming a happier and more peaceful of a person.

Finding Values

Think long and hard about what your motivations and intentions are. For most people, their true
intentions and motivations lie beyond their awareness; you can discover them with some
introspection. What do your true intentions say about your character? Unfortunately many
people’s motivations are tied up with values that have been conditioned and hard wired into their
system. These external values, not derived from personal experience will never lead to personal
fulfillment. The key to breakthrough and growth is to discover your values through experience.
Experience is how you learn at the first hand level. It is your experiences that define who you are.
If you are ever to figure out yourself and what’s important to you then you need to experience
what is important to you.

Hopefully you can see why it is so important to have an internally validated set of values. Your
values directly affect your process and how you go about handling the various areas of your life. If
all you value is an outcome, then the process is will be flawed and by definition the outcome less
than your potential. If you value the process (love of practice, love of action, love of learning etc.)
then the outcome is simply a natural result.

“Every outcome is the result of a process.”

You will never master the piano if your primary concern is to impress people or simply to know
how to do it. These kind of outcome oriented values are unsustainable, and in vein. If you place
excessive value on the outcome then the process will feel like a joyless grind. But if you simply love
the music, the expression, and the very act of practicing you will stick with it far longer, receive far
greater joy, and reap far more rewarding benefits.

The actions that affect our values are learned through first-hand experience. Having experiences in
this world is the number one way you will learn about the outside world and you’re inside world.

In your mind you have some concept of who you and what you want out of life, but as you seek
out new experiences you will learn, grow and change. Your discoveries will illuminate how the old
you was only that way out of ignorance. You will see how your old mindsets were influenced by
your old beliefs, old fears, and your ego. You will see how experience is what allowed you to gain
knowledge, outgrow your fears, reduce your ego, and discover the real truth about yourself and
the world around you. Grow, gain experience and get closer to the core of who you really are. Do
this and you will find that your happiness, peace and joy become an afterthought.

Chasing Wealth

One of the most common outcome oriented values that people have is the pursuit of money.
Many people sacrifice their well-being and compromise on their values to chase wealth. Wouldn’t
you love to be a millionaire? Do you see those people and covet their wealth? The reality is that
many of the world’s rich are merely at the tail end of a frugal and hardworking life. Hardly the type
of personality to enjoy the fruits of labour. There is also the group of people born into wealth, do
they have truly have the happy life you covet? Many times people born into the upper class are
given so much and have so much leisure that they never face the obstacles in life that allow them
to grow. They end up soft, with little depth to their character, lacking the experiences at the
bottom that give them a deeper appreciation at the top. And in reality how rich do you want to
be? Why do you want to be rich? You really need to ask these questions to yourself before you
give your life away attempting to climb the organizational ladder, or pour your heart and soul into
your own business.

Think about what you want to afford with your wealth. If you have ever indulged in the ‘high life’
and ate in the upper crust restaurants you know the kind of patrons that are there – old people.
Old people. Does your age effect the enjoyment you get out of life?

Wealth Exercise

These questions lead into the following exercise that will help bring clarity to the topic of money.
The first step is to figure out what’s free that makes you happy. Maybe its things like human
affection, sleeping in, meaningful friendships, or looking at waterfalls. While its obviously true
things that cost money may also make you happy - the value that you get vs. the financial cost is
rarely in balance. In fact sometimes it’s so far off that it’s not even fair. The second step is to write
down all the things that make you happy, regardless of what they cost.

Continue the experiment to see what lifestyle you are affording, but not on a COST basis but on a
VALUE basis; assign a dollar value to the things you are enjoying in your life – or would like to
enjoy. For example, that feeling of well-being after you’ve gone for a run and had a great meal
many people would pay 50 bucks to feel like that, but what else?

Making someone laugh - $5
Feeling after exercise - $20
Being well rested - $40
2 hours of shin splitting laughter with your best friends - $200
Genuine intimacy from a gorgeous girl - $500
Freedom to be yourself no matter who you're in front of - $?,???
Killing it at any skill (jamming, macking, golfing, whatever) - $?,???
Your mental well being -$??,???
Your long term health - $?,???,???

This list is provided as an example, everything on there is free. I have everything on this list, so to
me I am getting MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF VALUE OUT OF LIFE. How many millionaires in their 60’s
70’s and 80’s would give away their entire fortunes to be in their 20’s or 30’s again. Think about
that before you spend your life manifesting financial goals. You really need to dive in to the things
that make you happy, and you will find that there is an obvious and exploitable imbalance
between the cost and value of something.

So is financial success is a worthy goal? Not at the cost of the things most important to you
(internal values). Many people are unclear of their own values and regrettably live their life in
disharmony and eventual regret. Redefine success from how much money you make to how much
VALUE you get out of life. Based on my examples I am living like a MILLIONAIRE. And besides does
it really matter whether I have the 24 foot vaulted ceilings and extra 1000sq/ft on my home?

Compromising Values

Many people are tempted to cheat and scam their way through life – compromising on their
internal values for an external gain. Different people are on different levels regarding their values;
many people are on the level where they will not break the law outright but if seen with an
opportunity – despite it being illegal – they will do it. Somebody may come across a wallet on the
street and it has cash in it. Would you keep the money and ditch the wallet? Would you keep the
money and return the wallet? Would you return the wallet with the money in it?

I’m not advocating we become monks, but I want you to think about this. What if you found that
wallet on the floor at your work? Would you take the money then knowing it was your coworkers
and colleagues? Is it the risk of being caught that stops you from stealing the money? What if you
looked in the wallet and recognized the id as a friend of yours?

The point is that most people’s ethicality is not based on some core values that they have come
upon (internal) but it’s based on the environment, the situation (external). Unfortunately this is
not a very good place to be. You always learn about someone’s true character when they are
acting as if they know they can get away with whatever their doing.

If they know they can get away with it, some people will always take the money out of the wallet.

Let’s apply that kind of behaviour to the social dimension where consequences are not so black
and white. If you are the type of person who steals money out of the wallet because they know
they will get away with it, how does that behaviour translate socially? These people will lie for
convenience, emotionally blackmail people to get what they want, mask their true intentions, talk
behind peoples backs, generate negativity and arrogance, and fail to honor promises and
commitments - how do you think that will affect their long term relationships with people? This
self-serving short term view is an incredibly ineffective way of living; you may get away with your
lie and in the short run but there will generally be very negative upper level consequences to your
actions.

You need to look at the entire ecosystem of your actions and their consequences. The person who
lies for convenience and emotionally black mails people is blinded by their selfish attitudes, unable
to see the end consequences of the behaviour. This can be demonstrated by looking at someone
who is opposite in behavior, someone who is honest with people, authentic, generates positivity,
keeps promises and honors commitments. How do you think that person’s relationships will be in
the long run? Clearly they will have more trust, deeper meaning and significance, be more
genuine, and provide significantly more value to both parties. The person’s unconditional
consideration for others is reflected back to them and in a sense they reap what they sow.

Cheaters, scammers, and people with extremely self serving attidudes in life (near criminal)
generally live in hermatige and etc. Think about this if you desire to rise to a high position in life –
managerial, political, or socially? In such a position the number of interactions you have with
people increases and therefore so do the effects of your behaviour. If you are dishonest, lie, cheat,
and scam – even if you only do it when you think you will get away with it – the long run effects
will be very negative and the more interactions you have the quicker you will reach this stage.

Exploiting the imbalance

When you live in alignment with your values you will begin to experience true happiness. Theres a
peace of mind you attain when you always uphold the things that are important to you. As you
lead your life and never compromise on your values you will have a peace of mind about you at all
times. As I explained the value vs. the cost of things in life is rarely in balance and in order to
exploit this imbalance you need to have a strong understanding of your values. The cost is usually
clear as an investment of your time or energy or resources, but the value you will receive from
such an investment can only be understood if you know yourself.

We spend our entire lives learning about the outside world, and we neglect to look inside. There
are many ways to go about your exploration – through meditation, daily rituals, travelling,
psychedelic drug use, and more. To leverage your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses you
need to understand them. To get the most out of this life you have to have a clear idea of what
makes you happy and what doesn’t. Often times we don’t understand this (have not experienced
it).

If you want to fully exploit the outside world and get the most out of your life you must fully
explore the inside world – you
It’s human nature to seek out comfort. Comfort synonymous with homeostasis, and homeostasis
is the precursor to atrophy, decline, and death. You must continue to seek out new experiences in
life otherwise you will be destined to homeostasis and perpetual mediocrity.

Think about the one chance you’ve been given on this earth and say to yourself, “homeostasis and
perpetual mediocrity.”

How does that make you feel?

auto-realización y no theorycrafting falo-centrado ...

valores

riqueza.

humano, dormir, amistades significativas, o mirando cascadas.

Hacer reír a alguien - $ 5

mediocridad perpetua."

¿Cómo te hace sentir eso?
