Logos Ministry

A

s the dog days of summer rolled into Oak Park, seventy teenagers and adult leaders from Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church climbed aboard two buses and rolled out of town. For a week in July the church’s youth group traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to be of service to this economically challenged Native American population. Painting and repairing low income housing and being youth volunteers at a local club for area children were activities that gave the Fair Oaks youth group opportunity to extend outreach to the people of this underserved community. The teens had a variety of experiences, but all were moved and sobered by working with the people of Pine Ridge, whose futures are

dim. With alcoholism and drug abuse being prevalent, unemployment at Pine Ridge hovers between 80-85% of the population. Fair Oaks Church is committed and very active in its ministry to youth. One of the largest ministries at the church is the after school Wednesday Logos program where over 100 children and youth gather at the church to participate in Bible study, Worship Skills, Recreation and Play, and Family Meal Time. The heart and focus of Logos is building Christian relationships and seeing all people as children of God. Weekly Sunday school is offered for children and adults, as well as multiple 34 week Disciple Bible studies. For further information call 386-4920.

hese are the words that begin each Sunday’s service at Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Shortly afterwards, the Congregation’s Covenant begins: Love is the doctrine of this Congregation. The search for truth is its sacrament. And service is our prayer. Many people are unfamiliar with the Unitarian Universalist religion. Senior minister Rev. Alan Taylor explains. “We focus on life before death. The central question for us is not ‘What do you believe?’ but instead ‘How shall we live?’ “What binds us together is our shared commitment to living our values of respect, compassion, integrity, service, creativity, and courage. We aim to cultivate a community where all can grow and support one another in living our values. “We are a house of worship where everyone is encouraged to ‘come as you are.’ We won’t tell you to change who you are, but we will challenge you to live with honesty, with courage, with hope. We will challenge you to connect with others and with the spirit of life, which many of us, though not all of us, call God.

In the spirit of the community

scension Catholic Church of Oak Park is known for beautiful liturgies, glorious music, outstanding education programs for children, a call to service, a commitment to community. Ascension has served the tri-village area since 1907 and celebrates the story of its rich history. Ascension is a stewardship parish, called to share what we have been given, and return it with increase to the Lord. Over forty parish organizations provide outreach within and beyond our parish boundaries, enhance our prayer life, and invite others into the faith. The parish is led by very active lay leadership groups: the Parish Council, Stewardship Team, Finance Committee, School and Religious Education Boards. Ascension School welcomes nearly 500 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and more than 400 students from public schools participate in the religious education program. All Ascension children prepare for sacraments together: in second grade for First Eucharist; in fourth grade for First Reconciliation; and as young teens for Confirmation. Over 200 teens are involved in Ascension’s youth ministry program; many of them participate in service trips to serve the those in need throughout the country. The heart of parish life is worship. race Lutheran Church’s Adult Education programs are one of the ways in which the congregation inspires members to put its mission statement-- “Bring in, build up, and send out disciples for Jesus Christ”—into action. People from the community are invited to participate in these programs, which begin at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays. Adult Ed programs this fall pay special attention to “sending out.” Kurt Hendel from the Lutheran School of Theology Chicago will present a special program on Sunday, September 11, using Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s witness against the evils of Nazi Germany as a basis for reflecting on the suffering caused by the events of September 11. The next Sunday, September 18, Gunes Murat Tezcur of Loyola University speaks on “Democratic Struggles and Muslim Reformers in the Middle East.” Dean Lueking, Grace’s Pastor Emeritus, has organized a series of Sunday morning discussions with community leaders in October. Guests include John Johnson, President of Concordia University (October 2); OPRF Superintendent Steven Isoye, Fenwick teacher Gerald Lordan, and Walther Lutheran High School Principal Jim Craven (October 9); Jack Cleary and Bruce Elegant, representing West Suburban Hospital and Oak Park Hospital (October 16); and David Pope and John Rigas,

Oak Park’s and River Forest’s village presidents (October 23). Grace’s Faith Perspectives programs focus on the role of faith communities as places where people with different viewpoints can converse about social issues in a compassionate way. This year’s topic is immigration, with interfaith programs and discussions scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on November 6 and March 11. Sunday worship at Grace begins at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Children age 3 through high school meet for Sunday School, Confirmation and Teen Talk at 9:45. Nursery service is available for younger children during worship services and the between-service education hour. Grace is located at 7300 Division in River Forest, one block west of Harlem. en years ago, the final act of many 9/11 victims was one of love. Facing the unthinkable, their parting gesture was to reach out to family and friends – knowing that in the end – relationships are what matter most. For many people in today’s uncertain world, the need for relationships – a community where we are known and loved – includes a spiritual home. Adults and children alike need a place where lives are shaped by love, hope, service, and forgiveness. Sadly, too many places of worship have not been always been – expressing fear instead of hope, and intolerance instead of love. This is NOT the case, however, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Oak Park, where we are committed to the “great commandment” that Jesus quoted from the Hebrew Scripture. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength,” said Jesus, “and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” We are committed to peace and unity among people, much as people around the world were the day after 9/11. Many reached across boundaries of faith, race, and class to connect not only with family and friends, but with perfect strangers. Jews, Muslims, Christians, atheists, and agnostics were

together in their shock, and quite honestly, filled houses of worship to capacity for weeks after that fateful day. There was a sense of unity that helped us survive those first days of trauma, and although ten years later the context has changed, our need for communities of love and support has not. The economy is fragile, political cooperation diminished, and resources for crisis response are drying up. We need each other more than ever – need honorable values, places of accountability, and a chance to make a better world together. So join us at 545 S.
