WESTERN TRADITION
Because ancient Greek thought, and tradition serves as the basis of much of our own, it might be instructive to look at Greek traditions surrounding death. In Greek, the word “funeral” means “to take care of someone,” and Greek funeral tradition calls for the deceased’s dearest loved one to watch over the body during the night before burial. At one time, it was also appropriate for the family to hire professional mourners, who would sing songs of mourning with them. Before the open casket was closed, the family would offer the departed a final kiss and place important items in the casket. Following the burial, it is still common practice to plant flowers around the burial site to purify it. Regardless of what traditions you choose to follow regarding the commemoration, your requests will be honored at Owens LIVINGSTON MORTUARY. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle.
